Welcome aboard! The Captain and The Cook explore the world by land and by sea. Our home, and usual mode of transport, is Thorfinn, our 45-foot Adams-designed yacht. Trains, planes and automobiles get us to all the other destinations! Our website is jam-packed with travel tips, budget tourism, fabulous things to see and do, and incredible places to visit. We have sailing destinations and information, live-aboard life, and recipes, including cooking on a boat and cooking with local ingredients.
The Captain and The Cook are
Intrepid sailors, perpetual travellers, bold explorers and lovers of food.
In May 2014, we began our journey aboard Thorfinn, our 45-foot Adam’s designed, cutter-rigged yacht. Leaving the coming South Australian winter behind, we headed north to more tropical climates.
We are now entrenched in the delightfully tropical climate of South East Asia. Our sailing has taken us along Australia’s south, east, and north coasts into Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Borneo, Philippines, Hong Kong, and Hainan in China. On trains, planes and automobiles, our travels have taken us to Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, England, France, Switzerland, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Turkey, Greece, Malta, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Oman, Dubai, Australia and New Zealand.
Incredible up-close encounters with wildlife
–
From the orang-utans at Kumai, on the island of Borneo, to the fantastic Komodo dragons in Indonesia. Capturing photos of hornbill birds in the wild to snorkelling with clownfish, turtles and a dugong! Monkeys, crocodiles, wallabies and dolphins…. we even rescued a turtle entrapped in discarded fishing nets and rubbish.
Meeting people
We have met many interesting people along the way, including people from the remote Indonesian island communities. People on these small islands are always happy to see a new face and welcome us into their villages, homes, and schools with friendly smiles and open hearts.
We constantly meet and interact with people of differing cultural, religious and political backgrounds; our eyes are opened daily to new values and conjecture. Although we have our own beliefs, or lack thereof, depending on your view, the perspective, sentiment and judgement of the people we meet is a diverse collection of ideas and postulation that has certainly given us an insight into other ways of life.
