La Casetta, which translates to English as ‘The Cottage’, was our favourite accommodation when we travelled through Italy. We were nearing the end of our two months in Europe and becoming tougher on ourselves to preserve money with each stop… and around the Amalfi Coast, that was not going to be easy. Therefore, we were looking for accommodation some distance from the expensive areas but close enough to explore all the places we wanted to see. We also wanted somewhere with a kitchen to cook or prepare some of our meals, preferably with a washing machine,e because we were desperate for some clean clothes. However, most importantly, it had to be affordable.
The fact we ended up with a beautifully renovated cottage with kitchen and washing machine, set in a delightful village, close to public transport and within easy reach of Amalfi, Sorrento and Pompeii, seemed too good to be true.
Before I continue, I want to let you know we received no compensation for this review. It wholly consists of our own opinions and our experience at La Casetta. We also have no affiliation with Airbnb, through which we booked this accommodation.
We usually book most of our accommodation through booking.com, but we have used Airbnb a couple of times in Europe, especially when trying to find accommodation with a kitchen, etc.
Orlando was a pleasure to deal with. He responded promptly to our messages and was very helpful with directions to the cottage. Orlando met us on the road and showed us where to park our car. Afterwards, he showed us around the accommodation and pointed out all the bits and pieces, including where the towels are kept, and the basket of goodies he had left for us in the kitchen. He also presented us with a chilled bottle of his very own wine.
During our stay, Orlando kept contact with Dwayne via Whatsapp and would inquire as to if there was anything we needed or that he could help us with. He advised us on the best ways to reach our daily destination and of places to visit.
The Location
Orlando’s La Casetta is located in Pimonte, a peaceful village surrounded by the green slopes of “Monte Faito”. The setting for this ‘cottage’ is beautiful, and it feels very much like village life in the sense of a movie or ideologically. The people are friendly, and the walk to the accommodation is down a small stone lane. It is all very quaint. It is within proximity of the Amalfi (23km) and Sorrento (13km), as well as the main archaeological sites of Pompei (8km) and Herculaneum (10km).
The Accommodation
We were pleasantly surprised, and our stay at Orlando’s La Casetta exceeded our expectations. We were very impressed with the condition of the cottage. Everything was immaculate, tidy and spotlessly clean. The cottage has been recently renovated and is tastefully furnished.
The accommodation consists of the entire cottage. Downstairs (where you enter) is a small lounge room, plus a kitchen/dining area. This is where you will also find the bathroom, and under the stairs, neatly tucked away behind a cupboard door, is the washing machine. Upstairs is a large bedroom.
The Lounge Room
The lounge room has a three-seater sofa, which I assume converts into a sofa bed, as the accommodation is said to accommodate up to four people. Orlando notes that it turns into a queen-size sofa bed with a real mattress. There is also a flat-screen TV with English channels and some shelving.
The Kitchen/Dining
The kitchen/dining room contains a fully functional kitchen with a dishwasher, oven and stovetop, and fridge/freezer. This kitchen had everything we needed to easily cook delicious meals and save precious dollars. There are ample pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, and a Moka pot for coffee. The room contains a dining table and four chairs, and under the stairs is the washing machine.
The Bathroom
The bathroom was of a good size and contained a toilet and a bidet, a shower, basin, and mirror, as well as drawers containing a hairdryer, extra toilet paper, shampoo, soap, etc.
The Bedroom
The bedroom is a large room with a king-size bed, bedside tables and lamps, a wardrobe and extra pillows.
The Wifi
The wifi was excellent.
Nearby Facilities
The village has a mini-mart (delicatessen), a pizza restaurant, a hairdresser, free drinking water, and public parking. The city centre of Piazza-Tralia-Pendolo is only a short walk away, where you will find an ATM, cafes, restaurants, etc.
Getting Around
For those using public transport, it is only a 5 to 10-minute walk from La Casetta to Piazza Tralia Pendolo, where you can hop on SITA public transport buses.
Even though we had rented a car, we took the train from Castellammare di Stabia to reach Sorrento and Pompei. Driving to these busy tourist destinations is not fun, and public transport is very affordable. At Castellammare di Stabia, there is accessible car parking within walking distance of the train station. Orlando can provide you with information on transportation, timetables, etc.
Our Verdict
La Casetta is excellent value for money. We do not hesitate to recommend it and would definitely stay there again if we had the chance. It was everything we were looking for and much, much more.
