About Walkers Flat
Walker Flat is a small town on the Murray River in South Australia approximately 107km from Adelaide. It has spectacular ochre-coloured cliffs and tree-lined river banks. It has a tiny population of 101 and a general store. That is about it. It is the perfect place to get away from it all and relax.
Our Visit
There are a couple of free camps in this area, both of which are on the river. We spent a long weekend camping at Hettner Landing with our parents and good friends Kate and Martin. It was a weekend of campfire cooking – slow-cooked beef cheeks, damper and camp oven roast lamb, wine, walking, and relaxation.
During the daylight hours, Dwayne and Martin went off to get firewood, we walked the cliff tops, and some of us kayaked the river. One day Dwayne cooked a spatchcocked chicken over the fire using nothing but some twigs, a couple of metal skewers, and a little copper wire. I spent my spare time watching the birds. The birdwatching is excellent by the river with various birds, including the black and whistling kites, darters, pelicans, swamp-hens, cormorants, herons, coots, kookaburras, galahs, rosellas, fairy-wrens, and honeyeaters.
We spent the nights with our bellies full of good food and delicious South Australian wine, chatting around the fire, roasting marshmallows, and sipping port.
Our thoughts
Pros – Toilet, rubbish bins, the river, and a shop nearby.
Cons – No boat ramp.
Our verdict – Gorgeous area and very relaxing.
