When we cruised up the east coast of Australia in 2014, we missed out on visiting the Percy Isles due to inclement weather. So we were thrilled to be able to stop in on Middle Percy Island, briefly, a few months back. Middle Island, of the Percy Isles, is renown amongst cruisers as a great spot to anchor, socialise, swim and explore… there is also a small amount of re-provisioning you can do!

Percy Isles are part of the Northumberland Islands which are located south-east of Mackay, off the Queensland Coast of Australia. They can only be reached by private boat (no ferries). Middle Island is part of the Percy Isles National Park. However, part of Middle Island is a conservation park. The conservation park is managed by a lessee who operates the private accommodation and bush camping. Dogs, on a leash, are allowed on the tracks of the conservation park area only. They are not allowed into the national park, and no other domestic animals are allowed on the island at all.
What is there for cruisers?
Middle Percy was first settled in 1870, and the original homestead is still occupied by the island’s caretakers. The island has abundant maritime history and a long tradition of welcoming cruisers. Cruisers are welcome ashore, and there is a fabulous place for all to gather, chat, share sundowners or a BBQ with fellow travellers. The large A-frame structure on the beach has a few basic facilities including chairs and tables. There is lighting powered by solar panels and an information area where you can purchase the local produce. Nearby there is a BBQ, fire pit, shower and toilet.
The a-frame not only provides these simple luxuries for cruisers but also contains a remarkable collection of nautical memorabilia. It is like a museum in which you will spend hours wandering around exploring the boat names that you will find on flags, oars, buoys, and driftwood.
