We left Airlie Beach and journeyed to the Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club Rendezvous. The rendezvous is a four-day party better expressed with photos. Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club is a concept created as a “network for cruising yachties and individuals who enjoy boating”. Their yearly rendezvous raises money for prostate cancer. Over $80,000 was raised this year in 2014! To learn more, visit the SICYC website.
The Rendezvous started on Thursday, and as we arrived a day earlier, we took the opportunity to visit Gloucester Island.
The official first day of the rendezvous was Thursday, and it kicked off with happy hour at Montes, a mud crab auction and race!
On Friday morning, we enjoyed a champagne breakfast at Cape Gloucester Resort. We then went for a long walk to “walk off” breakfast!
Shag Islet
Then it was out to Shag Islet to fly the kites, enjoy a drink and a sausage sizzle, and catch up with more friends!
Friday arvo was back to Montes Resort for happy hour again, where we ran into people we met earlier in the year in Port Fairy, VIC. Katrina also arrived to join in the festivities!
Hands Across The Blue
Saturday morning started slowly. Boats were judged “best dressed”. Plenty of vessels put on a good display of flags (during the day) and lights (night during the day). Then we all rafted up our tenders for “Hands Across The Blue”. The dinghies formed the shape of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia logo, and a band entertained us from the back of an impressive motor vessel.
Parrot Head Party
Saturday afternoon, the Parrot Head Party started with a group photo.
The drinks started early…
The dancing started early…
Then the sun went down, and the party really kicked off! Dwayne hit the dance floor and did the Dwango Tango!
The Pirate Fair
The final event was the Pirate Fair at Dingo Beach Hotel on Sunday. A spit Roast lunch, Pirates of the Caribbean theme, a band and prizes for best dressed.
Some costumes were very clever, such as this guy in a “Pirates of the Living Dead”!
We all had a great time, and before long, the weekend was over, and Dwayne and I were sailing north again.
Next up – Cape Gloucester to Cairns
