You will find that you can buy almost any Thai dish on the streets of Thailand. Street food in Thailand is convenient, delicious and cheap. Furthermore, it is a great way to enjoy an integral part of Thai culture.
Take advantage of this quintessential experience in Thailand. Don’t limit yourself to hotel restaurants and other fancy venues because you will miss out on some of the most sense-stimulating foods on offer. Thai food looks exciting, smells delicious, and is a delight for the tastebuds. Vivid, aromatic and piquant… it ticks all the boxes.
Before I get into my favourite Thai street food delights, here are some tips for those a little hesitant to eat from the roadside stalls.
- Eat where the locals eat.
- Try to eat during the busy time.
- Eat at the busy places – long lines usually mean satisfied customers returning, and high food turnover = fresh.
- Buy from a vendor that specialises in one type of food – they will be replacing their fresh ingredients regularly.
- Soups and broths are served hot – this can be a good start for those worried about their stomach constitution.
Som Tam is a green papaya salad. The two most popular papaya salad types include dried shrimp, or salted crab. Unless you have an iron gut, steer away from the papaya salad with crab – called som tam pbooh. Instead, opt for the salad with dried shrimp and peanuts, which is called som tam Thai. We like this salad so much that we make it for ourselves when we get the ingredients. Click here for my recipe.
2. Tod Mun Pla, ทอดมันปลา
Flavoured with red curry and kaffir lime leaf, these tasty little fish cakes are easy to eat when you are on the go. They are usually served in a plastic bag with a skewer to help you eat them. Click here for my recipe for yummy Thai Fish Cakes.
3. Larb Moo, ลาบหมู
This Thai salad is made with pork, toasted ground rice (for texture), and the flavours of chilli, fish sauce, lime and fresh herbs. A meat salad! Yes… I remember my cousin was ecstatic upon realising that the main ingredient of the mixture I served him was meat! LOL. Larb is another Thai dish we regularly make on our boat. Click here for my recipe which I made with chicken.
4. Phad Thai, ผัดไทย
Pad thai is a stir-fried noodle dish flavoured with tamarind pulp, fish sauce, dried shrimp, and garlic. It is served with bean sprouts, lime wedges, and roasted peanuts, and sometimes, like the photo below, it comes with an

5. Gai Tod, ไก่ทอด
Fried chicken is easy to find on the streets of Thailand. It is so much nicer than KFC! Flavoured with garlic, coriander seeds, white pepper and coriander root it is my absolute favourite chicken…. unfortunate for my waistline!
6. Tom Kha Gai, ต้มข่าไก่
This spicy coconut chicken soup is bursting with galangal, lime, lemongrass and fish sauce flavours. It includes mushrooms and coriander. In 2007, when I first tasted this soup, I was surprised by just how delicious it was! It is so good and is another Thai meal we make regularly.
7. Kanom Jeeb, ขนมจีบ
These delicious dumplings are found in almost every – if not every – market we have been to in Thailand. Often made with pork, chicken, prawn or vegetables, the colour and shape of the dumpling represents a different flavour or ingredient. At the markets, you will usually have them served in a bag, with another small bag of dipping sauce and a skewer to eat them with.
Still not sure about eating street food? Why not do a food tour?
8. Kaprao Moo Grob, กระเพราหมูกรอบ
Crispy Pork with Holy Basil is a stir fry of pork with basil, garlic, chilli, oyster sauce and soy sauce. It comes served on rice and often topped with a fried egg… absolutely scrumptious!
9. Moo Ping, หมูปิ้ง
This skewered pork is always moist and delicious. The pork meat is marinated in oyster sauce, dark soy, coconut milk, garlic and palm sugar, then cooked over coals on the barbecue.
10. Sai Ua La Wan, ร้านไส้อั่วลาวัลย์
These Northern Thai Sausages (also known as Chiang Mai sausage) are made with pork and delicious flavours such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, and red curry paste. They are very popular in markets all over Thailand.
11. Banana Roti, ไทยเครป
Delicious banana and egg filled roti, fried and topped with condensed milk. These ‘pancakes’ are freakishly delicious!
12. Khao Lam, ข้าวหลาม
Sweet sticky rice cooked in bamboo. The lengths of bamboo are filled with a mix of sticky rice, sugar, red beans and coconut cream. They are then roasted slowly over coals. Very sweet and delicious!
13. Prik glua
Prik glua is a spicy mix of salt, chilli and sugar. This deliciously addictive spicy mix is served with slices of tropical fruit and can be found at most of the fruit carts you see all over Thailand. Our favourite is the green mango with Prik Glua!
The above street food is only a tiny example of what is available on the streets of Thailand. The following photos are of food, street stalls, and markets from all over Thailand. Enjoy the visual stimulation of these fabulous foods with my pictures… but get over to Thailand to taste and smell this exciting street food for yourself!
